Freewinds Visits to Barbados
Thirteen hundred students from 29 Barbados schools participated in the Anniversary Celebration of the Maiden Voyage of the Freewinds motor vessel. A helicopter videotaped the parade of local performers and children, and a full television studio (35,000 pounds of equipment) was moved aboard the ship to film the festivities.
Bajan Good Time
Barbados natives call themselves “Bajans” and the celebration was 100% Bajan. Steel bands, stilt walkers and local music groups including the Royal Barbados Police Band performed for more than three hours capped off by a marine gala and parade of yachts, sail boats and fishing boats.
Cultural and Economic Contributions
According to Port Captain Ludwig Alpers, the Freewinds has made it their duty to become part of the Barbados community. The ship has hosted dozens of concerts on behalf of the people of the Barbados.
“The Freewinds isn't satisfied with just contributing financially to this island,” Alpers said. “We contribute culturally too, as a small token of our appreciation for the support and cooperation we have received from Barbados throughout the years.”
Scientology Spiritual Retreat
The Freewinds is also the home of the Church of Scientology Flag Ship Service Organization, an advanced spiritual retreat for Scientology parishioners based in the Caribbean. Scientologists from such countries as Japan, Taiwan, Russia, United States, Europe and Mexico agree the Freewinds and Barbados are a perfect combination.
